Blue takes a display out of strictly-Christmas territory and into winter, which is why it works so well for municipalities, offices and public spaces that need to feel seasonal without being denominational. Paired with silver and white it reads as ice; paired with warm white lighting it turns surprisingly rich. High-gloss ornaments are what make a wreath read from the street. The reflective surface picks up your string lights and throws them back, so a lit wreath sparkles rather than sitting flat. On a commercial frontage or a front door viewed from the kerb, that carry matters more than fine detail. Sizes are given in millimetres, as the trade uses: 60mm is roughly 2.4 inches, 80mm about 3.1 inches, and 150mm just under 6 inches. Most designers work with at least two sizes on the same wreath — a run of smaller balls to fill, and a few large ones as focal points — because a wreath decorated in a single size tends to read as flat.
