Gold is the warm half of the metallic pairing, and it belongs with red, burgundy and deep green. It flatters warm white lighting in a way silver cannot, making the whole arrangement feel richer after dark. For traditional commercial work — hotel lobbies, restaurant frontages — gold is usually the right call. Matte ornaments do the opposite job to gloss: they absorb light instead of bouncing it, which gives a wreath depth and stops it looking like a cluster of highlights. They also photograph far better than gloss, with no hot spots from a flash or a shop window. Most designers mix the two, using matte as the body of an arrangement and gloss as the accent. Sizes are given in millimetres, as the trade uses: 60mm is roughly 2.4 inches, 80mm about 3.1 inches, and 150mm just under 6 inches. Most designers work with at least two sizes on the same wreath — a run of smaller balls to fill, and a few large ones as focal points — because a wreath decorated in a single size tends to read as flat.
