Socket spacing sets the character of the finished line. Tighter spacing gives a dense, continuous ribbon of light, while wider spacing spreads the same bulb count further and keeps the cost per foot down on long commercial runs. Buying wire on the spool is also simply cheaper per foot than pre-made sets, and it means a crew can handle unusual rooflines, dormers and returns without improvising.
